Fête de la Musique, France

Held every June 21 nationwide, the Fête de la Musique, or Music Festival, is practically a national holiday. From morning to, well, the next morning, From Paris to Perpignan and everywhere in between, you can barely pass a street corner without hearing music, whether live or being spun by a DJ.

There are huge concerts by the leading names in rock. There are wrinkled old men playing accordions outside cafés. Cool jazz singers with a bass accompaniment. String quartets. Traditional French folk music. Enough reggae to shame Jamaica. And, of course, food and wine are available from bars, cafés and restaurants that have tables set outside their premises.

The big cities have more to do and see during Fête de la Musique, while the smaller towns have a stronger mix of traditional and modern music. If you have the chance to be in France on this day, you have to take part in this wonderful celebration of the start of summer, the joy of music, and the pride of a nation.

Festival de Nîmes, France

The Nîmes Arena is the best preserved amphitheater of the Roman era. Throughout the centuries it has seen action as a Roman theater, a fortress, a chapel, a bullring, and since 1997, as the venue for an epic series of summer concerts.

Festival de Nimes takes place throught the entire month of July and attracts the likes of Metallica, Placebo, Noir Désir, Ben Harper, David Bowie, The Cure, Compay Segundo, Depeche Mode and Rammstein to its ancient stage. Musicians feel how special the venue is and it tends to shine through in the performance.

This year we’ll see everyone from Supertramp to Sting to Santana, and dozens more. The big shows are in the fantastic Arènes de Nîmes, a Roman-era coliseum that is still in use today; check out Metallica’s most recent concert DVD to get a load of what an evocative venue it is. Catching your favorite band echo off the Roman stone is a memory that will last a lifetime.

Øyafestivalen, Oslo

The Øyafestivalen in Oslo is a major music event in Norway that offers an amazing line-up of internationally known rock and indie bands, singers, and other performers! This annual event takes place in August and without any doubt this is one of the "can't-miss" events when you're flying to Oslo.

Øyafestivalen is an annual Norwegian music festival held in Middelalderparken (lit. the Medieval Park), Oslo. It has grown quickly since its modest start in 1999 with an audience of 1000 people in one day, and has now become one of Norway's biggest festivals.

The festival area in Middelalderparken consists of four main stages (Sjøsiden, Enga, Vika, Odden). More than 80 bands played in the park in 2009. Featuring musicians likeSonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, babyshambles and Franz Ferdinand, the festival currently draws an audience of approximately 60,000 people. The first two years, the festival was held on Kalvøya, near Sandvika just outside of Oslo. After the two initial years, Øyafestivalen was moved to Middelalderparken, downtown Oslo, making it more of a central festival. The festival lasts for four days in Middelalderparken. These days are preceded by a club night where the festival holds concerts in more or less all of Oslo's central clubs.

Copenhagen Distortion, Copenhagen

Coming to Copenhagen in June? Come prepared for a big explosion of parties and to meet party people like you from all over the world! Copenhagen Distortion is the festival where Copenhagen turns into party-heaven on earth, every year on the first weekend of June. The organizers orchestrate more than 50 parties in more than 50 locations over 5 days, in 5 neighborhoods, with 3 giant block-parties and 32,000 people. The cultural focus is on the newest, the sweetest and the wildest side of street life and nightlife in Copenhagen. Come out and show the world how to party it up in Copenhagen!

When it comes to some certain facts about the festival, ever since 1998 Copenhagen Distortion is Scandinavia’s leading street and nightlife festival, orchestrating 88 dance floors across 5 days of party madness, including four huge block parties and an insane Club Clash programme in spectacular locations (warehouses, museums, sport halls, bridges, old breweries…). The festival is unique, as it is fully mobile. Each day during the festival, Distortion visits a different neighbourhood in Copenhagen, so that both the street programme and the night events (The Club Clashes and Final Party) move through the different city districts, celebrating Copenhagen’s urban space, as much as it celebrates the newest and the wildest aspects of international club culture.

Music of all guises finds a home at this cool festival ranging from hip-hop and techno to the more traditional sounds of rock, folk and jazz. The event also showcases the city's less mainstream art with exhibitions, shows and internet presentations which adds to the festival's ambiance of creativity and youthful energy.

Let the electric open air embrace you!

It's all about glamour and fashion baby!

Well yes, M'era Luna is not solely a music festival but a fashion show as well or a "modenschav" as Germans would put it :) The show is all about, well you may guess, goth subculture, corsets for men and women, cyber outfits, make up etc.

Stay tuned and start thinking about your perfect outfit for the time is ticking out!

Aste Nagusia Bilbao

Aste Nagusia or Big Week is the third week in August when in each town in The Basque Country the summer-long fiestas are held. For ten days the city centre is bursting with people, young and old, enjoying a mix of traditional Basque music, dance and sports that line the main streets. The sound of the accordion fills the air while groups of dancers in traditional white costumes with red sashes, berets and espadrilles jump and kick in unison. If you are feeling peckish, you could head over to one of the cooking competitions where local chefs compete to produce the best bacalao al pil-pil (cod in a garlic sauce) or merluza en salsa verde (hake in green sauce). And if you are feeling particulary adventurous you could try your hand at bull fighting. Once the sun has set, huge crowds gather for the daily firework displays as pyrotechnic teams from the surrounding villages compete for the 'best display' award. And then the party begins. The bar staff in the txosnas serve up beer, wine and kalimotxo (red wine and Coke) to the thirsty punters.

A word of warning: don't wear any clothes that you actually care about. Drinks come in large, plastic cups shared among groups and the chances of you surviving in the night without large red stains down your top are small.
The singing, dancing and drinking carries on until the not-so-early hours of the morning. The week ends with the burning of Marijaia, a rosy-cheeked mascot of the fiesta, outside the Arriaga theatre.
One aspect of Aste Nagusia that stood out for me was the lack of a conspicuous police presence as compared to, say, the Notting Hill Carnival where it can feel like there are as many police as carnival-goers. There is a real family atmosphere during both the day and night. And while Asta Nagusia might not be as well-known as the Tomatina or San Fermin festivals, the opportunity of joining in with a whole city at play for a week is one not to pass up on.
